Not “feeling it” today? Everyone occasionally feels drained of energy. And as we get older, days of feeling fatigued and sluggish might even outnumber the good days. The couch becomes a refuge, and the once youth-like vitality we once enjoyed appears to be zapped out of existence.
What you may be lacking is sufficient amounts of a powerful dual-role antioxidant-energizer in your cells—co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). CoQ10 in the form ubiquinone, or ubidecarenone, is responsible for 95 percent of all energy synthesized in the body.
“After the age of 21 in most people, CoQ10 synthesis in the body decreases,” said Bill Judy, Ph.D., director of Southeastern Institue of Biomedical Research. “At the age of 60 to 65, CoQ10 synthesis is one half the level it was.”
Levels of CoQ10 can explain the difference between whether or not you’re feeling up to performing your favorite hobbies such as jogging, cycling, or surfing.
Located in the mitochondria, CoQ10′s primary job is to act as the electron carrier to produce cellular energy. The more energy we have in our cells, the more oomph we have to get through our day and power through workouts. Because the body’s natural production of CoQ10 begins to slow as we get older, it’s necessary to supplement with CoQ10 to maintain youthful energy.
There are numerous benefits that come with supplementing the diet with CoQ10, these five among the most important:
- Reclaiming that youthful energy in cells—remember, once your cells have more energy, you’ll have more energy.
- Greater desire to hit the gym or pavement for some exercise because of more energy you’ll have. “CoQ10 has been used as a supplement by professional athletes for more than 35 years,” Dr. Judy says.
- Greater endurance during your workouts and faster recovery times after your workouts, getting you back in shape faster.
- Heart health—the energy-producing properties of CoQ10 is one of the reasons why researchers believe supplementation is also critical for heart health, especially if taking pharmaceuticals such as statins that deplete naturally produced CoQ10.
- Greater protection from oxidative stress because CoQ10 acts as a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from harmful free radicals, which are at the heart of the aging process.
However, getting adequate amounts of CoQ10 daily comes with a couple points to remember. One is the absorption problem.
“The physical characteristics of CoQ10 products control its absorption,” Dr. Judy says. “When CoQ10 is commercially manufactured it is dried to a crystal in a purification process. Since the body cannot absorb crystals, these products are poorly absorbed.”
In fact, the body will only absorb about 1 percent of widely available dry powder versions. This is why finding a highly absorbable form of CoQ10 is most important in the pursuit for youthful energy.
The second point is to obtain enough CoQ10 from a supplement—most products only provide 30 to 60 milligrams in a poorly absorbed crystal form. A therapeutic dosage will yield noticeable results within a short time, even as little as weeks, but a poorly absorbed supplement is worthless.
“If you are older and have a CoQ10 deficiency, you can expect to have more youthful energy in your everyday life if you supplement with it,” Dr. Judy says. “If you are young with no CoQ10 deficiency then you may not feel the energy effects unless you are exposed to hard work or participate in sports.”
Dr. Judy recommends taking Isagenix Ageless Actives because it features a technology he developed that improves absorption of CoQ10. Ageless Actives contains CoQ10 as single molecules, not as crystals, dissolved into three natural lipids that enhance stabilization and absorption.
“With this tri-lipid solution the single molecules are absorbed 800 percent better above that of dry powder CoQ10,” he said.
Additionally, Dr. Judy says the formulation of Ageless Actives is highly effective and contains two other key bioactive ingredients for heart health and healthy aging–resveratrol and vitamin D.
“Resveratrol has a long history of beneficial effects in man relative to good health; and vitamin D is the new wonder vitamin, stimulating over 1000 genes in man that control everything from nerve to muscle function,” he added.
“Ageless Actives is a truly unique product and is perhaps the only product of its type in the supplement market.”
