e+™ Energy Shot, a flavorful energy shot with naturally sourced caffeine and adaptogens, boosts energy without the negative side effects associated with other highly caffeinated supplements.

A recent clinical study from Clarkson University reported mental performance benefits of e+. Presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, the study evaluated the effects of e+ on cognitive responses, mood, and physiological measures.

“One feature of this study that made it particularly novel was our use of two placebos – a regular placebo and a placebo containing synthetic caffeine to match the content of e+,” said Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at Clarkson and lead author of the study Ali Boolani, Ph.D. “This allowed us to compare the effects of the naturally sourced caffeine and adaptogenic herbs of e+ to the synthetic caffeine of the placebo.”

Study Details

The study included 30 male and female participants, averaging 21 years of age, who met a strict criteria for caffeine use. Performing the mental tasks involved, each subject completed 30 minutes of baseline testing prior to consuming a regular placebo, a caffeinated placebo, or an e+. After consumption of their assigned product, each subject undertook a new series of mental tasks to measure the effect of the product on various cognitive and mental performance along with mood.  The subjects waited a period of at least 48 hours between testing each product.

The study also analyzed physiological measures such as blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol. (The cortisol data was not presented at the conference but will be present in the manuscript being written for peer-reviewed publication).

Results

The results of the study demonstrated that none of the products affected heart rate or blood pressure. In contrast, both the caffeinated placebo and e+ increased mental performance and feelings of vigor. Interestingly, the effects of the caffeinated placebo were immediate before declining, whereas e+ resulted in a  slower, more gradual increase in these measures and did not decline.

The caffeinated placebo also resulted in a significant increase in tension and anxiety.

“These results suggest that adaptogenic herbs appear to improve some aspects of mental performance while perhaps minimizing some of the less desirable effects seen by caffeine alone,” said manager of Isagenix Research and Science and a co-author of the study Eric Gumpricht, Ph.D. “To what degree the source of caffeine affects these findings are unknown.”
